Winter Pleasures, oil on copper plate by Jan Griffier I, Dutch, 1645-1718.
When Griffier painted this Europe was going through what was known as the Little Ice Age. Here the people ice sail, skate, sled and compete at “kolven,” a type of golf played year-round. They also carry long sticks in case of thin ice and the wealthy ride in horse-drawn sleighs.
This painting is in the Koninklijk Museum in Antwerp, Belgium.
